6200 Hollywood Blvd Suite 3116
The Gallery is delighted to present Alake & Peggy’s Mall, a hybrid pop-up shop and exhibition curated by Alake Shilling and Peggy Noland. There will be an opening reception on Thursday, August 1 from 7-9 pm, and the pop-up will be open and shoppable on Saturdays and Sundays, 12-6 pm for the first three weekends in August.
Alake & Peggy’s Mall will feature work by a selection of Los Angeles-based designers and artists, on view at The Gallery’s current residency at the El Centro Apartments in Hollywood. The curators invited these creatives to submit work that relates to malls, whether through shopping, retail display, or conceptual fashion. Because many of the participants have complex practices that utilize different mediums and modes of production, the pop-up will show a range of work, some recognizable and some more experimental. The Mall also represents a community of local artists that are connected to the curators as a friend, collaborator, former student, or source of inspiration.
About the curators:
Peggy Noland (b. 1982, Kansas City, MO) is an artist based in Los Angeles whose work often deals with consumerism and branding, taking form in an eccentric world where subcultures and belief systems crash into each other. For 14 years she ran her own store in Kansas City (and later in Echo Park) that hosted a variety of thematic installations acting as both an art gallery and fashion boutique. Her work has been featured in numerous magazines including New York Times, Elle, WWD, Dazed and Confused, Vogue and many more.
Alake Shilling (b. 1993, Los Angeles, CA) is a painter and ceramicist whose works explore a world full of plush characters that communicate through their human-like emotions. She cites the wacky world of Lisa Frank as a source of inspiration as well as her long-time fascination with frogs and other wildlife. Her work has recently been shown at Deitch Projects, Los Angeles; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Rubell Family Collection, Miami; and 356 S Mission Road, Los Angeles. She will have a solo show at The Gallery later this year.
